|
Cassie McCracken Age 12
Waiheke High School Waiheke Island
|
Judges comments:
The use of multiple
"speech bubbles"
with different fonts,
graphics and themes successfully conveys the range of different kids with
different issues who might call Kidsline (even robots!). Cassie's comic book
style, excellent use of the whole frame and pastel shades chosen was especially
visually appealing. |
Christopher Scoggins Age 12 Woodville School Woodville
|
Judges comments:
The attention to detail in
everyday objects and
clothing draws the viewer into a real home in Christopher's entry. Powerful use
of colour, shading and the strong black outline of the drawing added up to a
very confident and compelling poster. |
Deearn Doeg Age 12 Sacred Heart Girls' College Fitzroy, New Plymouth
|
Judges comments:
In the judges’ view Deeam's
entry sincerely and honestly
captured commonly held negative feelings around self image, especially relevant
in today's media environment. She successfully conveyed what many entrants
struggled to do - finding a way to illustrate on the page hidden thoughts and
feelings. |
Himidiri Vithanage
Age 13
Farm Cove Intermediate
Pakuranga, Auckland

|
Judges comments:
Many entrants chose to
"split the frame” of their poster
design to depict good and bad, before and after or right and wrong. Himidri's
unique approach to the challenging idea of "choosing a path" was
handled with sensitivity and excellent drawing and
shading skills. | Hong-Thai Ear
Age 12
Manurewa Intermediate
Manurewa, Auckland
|
Judges comments:
The graphic style of this
design showed influences of
graffiti art and animé in both the figures and the typeface. Ultimately though
it was Hong-Thai's ability to capture powerful emotion through the posture of
the central figure that struck the judges most. |
Jaimee-Lee Hagan
Age 14 Waiuku College
Waiuku
| Judges comments:
Jaimee-Lee takes some common
symbols of hope and sadness and constructs a well
balanced and beautifully illustrated
poster. She creatively uses natural elements to convey emotion in a visually pleasing way.
|
Lisa Ha
Age 12
Stanhope Road School
Mt Wellington, Auckland

| Judges comments:
Lisa finds a unique way to
draw the eye
of the viewer across the
page, each image is carefully chosen and moves the story along. The
central image of the ladder is a powerful symbol of the purpose of Kidsline's
posters - to encourage kids to ask for help
in scaling any problems.
| Mamaeroa Matheson Age 12 Rotorua Intermediate Rotorua

| Judges comments:
Mamaeroa took a common expression and turned it into a
simple but powerful visual that children (and adults!) could universally relate
to.
Many callers to Kidsline
express this feeling to Buddies.
| Micaela Irvine Age 11 Weston School Weston

| Judges comments:
Micaela's poster takes a
specific issue
of parents splitting up and,
without words, presents it from a
child's perspective. Raw energy and emotion
is conveyed in the pencil
strokes –
the overall effect is
expressive and cinematic.
| Milana Press Age 12 Maidstone Intermediate Upper Hutt

| Judges comments:
The strong use of shape and
colour
in Milana's entry
immediately caught
the eye of the judges, but
it was the metaphor of the girl being trapped in
a bubble - separated from
the world -
that was especially
powerful.
| Miriam Gee Age 12 Taupo Intermediate Taupo

| Judges comments:
Miriam matches some simple
but
strong images with a lyrical
poem that
has visual impact too. It
caught the eye (and ears!) of Kidsline Buddies as being fresh and accurately
capturing some common frustrations expressed by
many callers
|
Naomi AllanAge 12Auckland Normal IntermediateMt Eden, Auckland | Judges comments:
The dream like qualities of
the
water colour in Naomi's
entry
captured the deep sadness
and depression that some callers to
Kidsline may experience. The
use of
water colour pencil also
reflected
this mood and was very well
handled
| Nelson Chan
Age 14
Forest View High School
Tokoroa

| Judges comments:
Nelson's handling of the
single figure
was both immediately
striking but also showed exceptional attention to detail. The rain drops in the
background reflected the tears experienced by the young boy. The posture and
facial expression poignantly captured the emotions felt by the child.
| Pearl Pan
Age 11
Carncot School
Palmerston North

| Judges comments:
Pearl combines a simple but
very powerful design with exceptional, drawing and shading and use of colour.
The choice of just a few images draws the viewer to connect together the girl,
the phone and the clock. This to us looked like a young girl struggling alone
to cope with the pressures of school work at home.
| Rachel Barker
Age 13
Sacred Heart Girls' College
Fitzroy, New Plymouth

| Judges comments:
Good composition, use of
scale and
the expression of energy set
Rachel's poster apart. The analogy of being chained to problems that can seem
overwhelming with Kidsline breaking
the chain was cleverly
conceived.
| Sara Kroef
Age 12
Ararimu School
Drury

| Judges comments:
This entry took a ‘big idea’
– the pattern of many peopl in our community being left on the margins – and
made it relevant to the ages and experiences of callers to Kidsline - that they
are literally slipping through the cracks.
Sara’s energetic colour and
shading was immediately striking.
| Sara Li
Age 11
Mt Roskill Intermediate
Mt Roskill, Auckland

| Judges comments:
Sara's entry was an instant
favourite
with the Buddies who were
involved in the initial stages of judging of the competition. Not only was it
one of the most professional entries but also expert use of typography and perspective communicate the idea of being
trapped on the shores of
unhappiness.
