Ben Nissen Age 10 Marshall Laing School Hastings

Bridget Logan Haley Age 9 Marshall Laing School Mt Roskill, Auckland |
|
Judges comments: Ben’s entry uses several effective and sophisticated verbal puns and the strong central image of a chessboard. Every element of the poster has been clearly thought out to maximize the promotion of Kidsline. The judges especially like the “Scared to move?” invitation. |

|
Judges comments: Bridget adopted a strong, positive message in promoting the benefits of talking to a Kidsline Buddy. Her entry was very well drawn (especially the girl) but it was the strong composition and striking use of colours that made her entry stand out to the judges. |
|
Che Roes Age 8 Kaurilands School Titirangi, Auckland
|
| Judges comments: One of our youngest winner’s, Che’s entry shows a strong composition
and a very specific visual style. The subtle effect of the grey pastel
outline (especially on the boy’s face) and effective use of shade and
colour made this one of the most touching entries.
|
| Clara Lui Age 10 Sunnybrae Normal School Hillcrest, Auckland

|
| Judges comments: Many
entrants have begun using computer generated elements in their designs.
Clara made sure that at the heart of her entry was a (nicely composed)
strong visual element and original drawing. The wording of the tag line
‘That’s what I’d do’ has a personal, engaging quality. |
| Danielle Te Whau Age 8 Rotokawa School Rotorua |
| Judges comments: The combination of the
dark black outlines and vibrant coloured dye helped this design catch
the eye of the judges. As with most of the top entries, it was
Danielle’s excellent drawing of believable facial expressions that
helped hers stand out from other entries.
|
Fiula Taufa Age 10 Dawson School Otara, Auckland

| Judges comments: Bright colours and
careful shading first caught the judge’s eyes, as did the expressions
of the two central characters. Using different font’s, typefaces and
bubbles, Fuila handles a large number of words and messages clearly
without getting them muddled.
| Georgina Taylor Age 9 Merrin School Christchurch

| Judges comments: Like the
character in the poster, Georgina balances many different elements in
this entry – a strong verbal and visual image, with smaller details in
the boxes like the signage, cobwebs, rats and letters framing it
perfectly. Humour also balances out the serious message of the poster. | Hamish Buchanan-Brown Age 10 Havelock School Havelock, Marlborough
| Judges comments: While most winning entries feature the drawing of a child, the judges
made an exception for Hamish’s highly sophisticated and believeable
entry. The detailed use of the calendar takes the viewer inside the
life of a caller to Kidsline – both the bad, the good and the ordinary.
| Harry Creevey Age 10 Whangaparaoa School Whangaparaoa, North Auckland
| Judges comments: Borrowing the bottle image from one of last year’s winners, Harry’s
energetic drawing and design gives it a refreshing spin. Dynamic use of
colour and typography are well used throughout. | James Manning Age 9 Avonhead School Christchurch
| Judges comments: James takes a simple
idea – a boy unable to sleep at night – and through skillful drawing
and a high attention to detail creates a striking winning image. The
‘sad face’ wallpaper is especially subtle. | Jareb Milner Age 10 Mangorei School New Plymouth

| Judges comments: This entry captures a
realistic still-life scene of a caller writing a ‘thank you’ note to
Kidsline. Using perspective and naturalistic colouring and shading,
Jareb’s poster catches the eye and suggests a ‘story behind the note’. |
Jennifer Tng Age 10 Milford School Milford, Auckland

| Judges comments: Jennifer’s entry
develops the theme of before-and-after using a number of contrasts to
show the difficulties of friendships. The judges noted the delicate
shading and drawing in her entry.
| Josh Bognar Age 9 Kelburn Normal School Kelburn, Wellington
| Judges comments: Josh’s
scenario uses one of last year’s winning posters as a starting point
for a visually and narratively sophisticated illustration. The use of
thought bubbles, speech bubbles and colour is pulled together by
confident drawing. | Lucy Simpson Age 10 Mapua School Mapua, Nelson
| Judges comments: This vertical
composition shows off some delicately drawn creatures and two colourful
central characters – the girl in the web and the butterfly. Lucy’s use
of composition and perspective strengthens the metaphor of being ‘stuck
in a web’.
| Luna Browne Age 10 South New Brighton School Christchurch
| Judges comments: Luna’s entry
shows a very developed and coherent drawing style with delicate
shading, capturing emotions through expression and posture. The
vertical composition is a great example of the confident choices made
throughout. | Millar Boddington Age 10 Waimauku School Waimauku
| Judges comments:
Millar’s concept puts
the protagonist in a Gulliver’s Travel type world where the smallness
he feels sees him dwarfed by giant schoolkids. The judges liked the use
of scale and the way an exaggerated drawing captured a real-life truth.
| Ngametua Kiro Age 10 Dawson School Otara, Auckland
| Judges comments:
Ngametua’s
imaginative and colourful entry is filled with dramatic drawing styles,
three-dimensional objects and cool cartoon characters. Little details
draw the viewers eye to every corner of the frame. |
Rhys Berge Age 10 Hilltop School Taupo
| Judges comments: Rhys showed strong storytelling
skills in this entry – the viewers eye is drawn across the page from
the angry parent to the upset child and landing on the telephone.
Bright colours and the smudging effects used are very atmospheric. | Shakerah Zakeri Age 10 Western Heights School Henderson, Auckland
| Judges comments: Shakerah’s use of a dramatic black background and stylized caricature
figures gives her entry a sophisticated look. Each set of figures is
given plenty of space to ensure a full but uncluttered composition that
is very effective. | Shannon Crene Age 10 Stanley Avenue School Te Aroha
| Judges comments: The high level of
detail in every aspect of Shannon’s entry gives the final image an
authentic, almost photographic quality. Delicate shading and careful
attention to typography give it a professional and funky look. | Shay Horsfall Age 10 Waiuku Primary School Waiuku
| Judges comments: The prominent
placement of the Kidsline telephone number against a white background
and innovative weaving of ‘it helps to talk’ into the phoneline between
caller and Kidsline Buddy made Shay’s entry stand out. | Solomon Baldock Age 9 Macandrew Bay School Dunedin
| Judges comments: Solomon’s use of
original drawing with collage and painted elements gave this entry a
unique look. The care taken to incorporate the theme of ‘sorting out’
with the puzzle visual was very well handled, creating a very
professional looking entry. | Tayla Cribb Age 9 Greenmeadows School Napier
| Judges comments: Tayla’s catch phrase
‘Feeling small? Just grab and call’ was a clever heading that stood out
thanks to simple, effective drawing and a striking, bright colour
scheme. |
