Lucci MacDonald (9)
Mercury Bay Area School

Whitianga, Coromandel

Artist description:

A girl who is getting bullied by another girl and is ringing 0800 Kidsline

 Judges Comments:

Lucci's winning poster was an early favourite in this category. Her drawing of kids passing cruel messages in class is one many kids will recognise.

The central figure in Lucci's design has heaps of character and a unique visual style. Drawing on the looks of contemporary kids TV shows and toys, Lucci's protagonist is still recognisable as a 'real, everyday New Zealand girl'.

Bright and contrasting coloured pencil is shaded to draw attention to the main character and the drawing incorporates dozens of small details to help fill out the viewer's imagination - stationary on the tables, a wall outside the window and a Kidsline poster on the wall.

With many posters focusing on just a single character, the judges thought the real classroom environment and vibrant characters in Lucci's entry would really stand out on Kidsline's posters in 2010.

Jamil Andres (11)
Kelston Intermediate

West Auckland

Artist description:

The sadness of the boy changed to happiness when he knew about Kidsline. He called them and he felt comfortable.

Judges Comments:

Jamil's winning poster stood out immediately to the Buddies opening the entries. His poster takes a clear concept of a child needing support and creates a warm, colourful image around it. The composition is carefully thought out to draw focus to the Kidsline logo in the top right corner.

The choice of oil pastels for the colouring is an inspired one, with glosy highlights on the pastel rainbows in the background and a golden glow across the face and shoulder. The black pen outline ensures that the exceptional drawing and detail in the figure is not lost to the shading.

While many entries show children visibly upset, the judges liked the positive message in the tag line 'I need comfort' and the optimistic look in the eyes of the boy. We look forward to featuring Jamil's entry on one of Kidsline's posters in 2010.

Melissa Chu-Fong (10)
Churton Park School

Wellington

Artist description:

Encouraging children to call Kidsline if they have no-one to talk to about some of the feelings shown on the flower

Judges Comments:

Melissa's highly commended entry is a clever and thoughtful concept that shows incredible attention to detail.

The repeated motif of a flower is used in a very subtle way, from the phone handsets shaped like leaves, the cord as a stem and the petals that illustrate a very accurate mix of callers to Kidsline.

Throughout the use of quality planning, drawing and shading draws the attention of the viewer to different areas of the design. Restrained use of text and well chosen fonts gave the overall design a very professional look.

Lisa Kang (12)
Glenfield Intermediate

North Shore

Artist description:

The girl whose parents are being mean and her teachers and classmates being bullying so she needs help.

Judges Comments:

Lisa's highly commended entry is a sophisticated and detailed entry with really original visual style.

Using a strong central figure in the right hand side, bold stripes of Kidsline blue are used to create frames that tell a story. A sketchy, loose style of drawing is effective at giving each situation a real-life, photographic.

While many entries reply on words or text to convey their message specially impressive was the fact that Lisa’s entry uses only images to connect with the viewer.
